Abstract:
The 1980s saw the beginning of a central dispute between Marxists and postcolonial theorists. The latter criticized Marxism as Eurocentric. In their view, Marxists saw European history as universally valid and therefore used the European model of development to interpret Chinese, Japanese, and Indian history. In this context, the well-known Japanese intellectual Takeuchi Yoshimi (1910-1977) appears as a postcolonial thinker avant la lettre. In his engagement with Chinese writers and politicians such as Lu Xun, Sun Yat-sen, and Mao Zedong, Takeuchi critiques categories such as East and West and develops a new political view of Asia--Pan-Asia.
The lecture is held in German.
