Between June 13 and 14, 2022, members of the Joint Center for Advanced Studies participated in the network meeting Krise and Neuordnung (Crisis and Reordering) organized by the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) and the University of Hamburg. The event dealt with questions of what constitutes “crisis” across political, environmental and economic domains, and the forms of global and national re-ordering that emerge out of crises. Prof. Dr. Björn Alpermann presented in the first panel “Was ist Krise? Was ist Neuordnung?,” and discussed in broad strokes the changes in Chinese leadership’s global self-positioning in the twenty-first century, pointing out the dual sides of crisis that can be interpreted as both a threat and an opportunity. Another theme of the event was to explore ways to promote “transfers” between circles of academics, policy makers, and the wider public. Participating BMBF-funded project members engaged in informal discussions to share individual thoughts and experiences, and presented posters introducing each project’s “transfer” methods.
